Award-winning cinematographer and video editor.
My aim is always to make films that create an emotional space for the audience to inhabit and inspire people to think differently about how they live their lives. I care deeply about our planet and the creatures that we share it with and am especially passionate about stories of people who work tirelessly to protect our natural heritage. I am fascinated by stories of human endeavour and the classic story of the underdog overcoming the odds. Essentially, I love telling stories that matter.
My recent work includes Mulanje, a climbing documentary, filmed in Malawi, which I directed, shot and edited. It has played at a number of adventure film festivals around the world.
I was the Director of Photography on Chasing Mandela’s Rainbow, a feature documentary about South Africa’s education system, which has played at multiple festivals around the world, as well as the short documentary, Disease With No Name, about community health workers in South Africa, which aired on Belgian TV.
I also worked as a co-director on Living on the Edge, a documentary from Black Bean Productions, about the ongoing conflict between humans and wildlife in the Serengeti.
In 2015, I directed, shot and edited a documentary for South African broadcaster M-Net, Cape Town Carnival: Elemental, for which I was honoured to win two Golden Horn SAFTAS (South African Film and Television Awards) for best cinematography and editing in a documentary short, as well as a nomination for best director. My 2016 film for M-Net, Cape Town Carnival: Street Life, also received SAFTA nominations for directing, cinematography and editing.
Ten years ago, leaving behind a teaching career, I took a leap into the unknown, determined to pursue my dream of being a filmmaker. Along my journey, I was fortunate enough to be mentored by some well respected filmmakers, cinematographers and editors while attending, first the Wildlife Film Academy and later, the SA Film Academy.
Since 2011, I have filmed in several African countries including Namibia, Nigeria, Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya and have been incredibly fortunate to work on a wide range of meaningful projects in various capacities including filming a family of meerkats in the Kalahari for three months, editing Black Bean Productions’ Maasai Olympics: The Hunt for Medals not Lions, which won Best Short Film at the Colorado Environmental Film Festival and working as a camera operator for two Al Jazeera series, Innovate Africa and My Nigeria.
I currently split my time between South Africa and Canada and am always on the lookout for interesting stories to tell and creative people to connect with. Please do get in touch, I would love to hear from you.
